The packaging market will be turned upside down when new European rules on TiO2 content come into force on 1 October 2021. Any plastic packaging that contains more than 1% TiO2 must be labelled as hazardous. And possibly disposed of as hazardous waste rather than being recycled.
Under the new regulations (which are not yet final) TiO2 will be classified as a category 2 suspected carcinogen by inhalation per 1 October 2021. Plastic packaging containing more than 1% titanium dioxide will have to carry cancer warnings on the label. Other liquid and solid mixtures, while not classified, will have to carry specific hazard warning statements and labels with correct-usage and precautionary instructions. The text as currently proposed introduces terms that are open to interpretation.
This is a dynamic situation for packaging manufacturers. Holland Colours is following these developments closely and working on sustainable and cost-effective solutions to bring TiO2 content below the magic 1% level.
