The growth of micro-organisms on untreated particles causes discoloration, unpleasant odors and polymer degradation issues. The use of antimicrobial additives prevent the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi or parasites on polymer surfaces. There are several types of silver based antimicrobials which provide a broad spectrum protection against bacterial colonization. Inorganic antimicrobial additives are silver, copper or zinc based while organic antimicrobials are OBPA, DCOIT and Triclosan.
